Here's the fighting man's HD progression given in OEC, p. 12:

Code: Select all
Level     Hit Dice (1d8)
  1            1+1
  2             2
  3             3
  4            4+1
  5             5
  6             6
  7            7+1
  8            8+2
  9            9+3
  10          10+1
  11          10+2
  12          11+1
  13          11+2
  14          11+3
  15          11+4
  16          11+5
  17          11+6
  18          11+7
  19          11+8
  20          11+9

Am I the only one who can't figure out how this is supposed to work? I think I understand it up to 7th level, going like this:
Level 1: roll 1d8 and add 1
Level 2: roll another 1d8
Level 3: roll another 1d8
Level 4: roll another 1d8
Level 5: roll another 1d8 and add 1
Level 6: roll another 1d8
Level 7: roll another 1d8 and add 1
But now...
Level 8: roll another 1d8 and add 2?
Level 9: roll another 1d8 and add 3??
Level 10: roll another 1d8 and add 1???
Level 11: add 2? or just 1??
...
Level 20: add 9?????????
:?

Well, OD&D was a bit obtuse in this matter. Some people actually re-rolled their hit dice every time they gained a level. I personally think that's a bit screwed up, but it makes sense reading the table as written. You might want to head over to the OD&D Discussion forums to ask how people handle it in the original.

Yeah, I was under the impression that Dan had modified what's in the LBB's, but I just checked and all he did was extend what's there to 20th level. So good call, I'll see what the OD&D guys have to say about it. (Btw, I'm not a fan of re-rolling every level either).
