In the '80's I ran this module twice as a DM. Both time the group was TPK'd, once by the hobgoblins and once by the minotaur. It is a truly sad, sad thing to watch a party of 4, 1st level characters walk, unsuspectedly into the lair of a minotaur.

I always found the gnolls to be the nastiest. If the team hasn't had the "avoid the higher caves" rumor, they're in deep trouble if they go up there.

I can see a party of 4 getting hacked up by the hobgoblins. I can't imagine attempting that one with fewer than 6 characters/retainers.
