CC2 or Hexographer

Postby jcftao » Sat Dec 18, 2010 5:36 am

Spent the day cleaning up my reading/music room and found my old copy of Campaign Cartographer.
I loaded it onto the computer and tinkered around with it for awhile. The maps it produces are really nice looking, but I'm wondering if the learning curve on it isn't too steep.

I've been working in Hexographer, which I really think does a great job and is very simple to use. What mapping programs do you folks use? If you had a choice, which of these two would be your choice?

I use CC2. Right now I'm only making dungeon maps, so I can't really comment on cities or wilderness yet. For dungeon maps it's perfect, for wilderness I expect the newer CC3 version adds a lot, the CC3 samples I see look a lot slicker than what I've been able to do in CC2.

It took me about 3-4 hours to go through the tutorial in the manual, once that was done it wasn't too bad. After several dungeon maps, it's fairly painless to get what I want now.

Yeah, I created some great looking CC2 maps many years ago, but I forgot how to use the dang thing since then! I know it will be easy to overlay a hex grid after drawing if need be. I've seen samples of people's work on this forum and others and am really amazed at the great work out there.

I have the old CC (I don't think it's CC2), and the learning curve was huge... well, what I consider huge and I'm pretty good with software. I loved the dungeons & cities it created though!

I also purchased hexographer months ago and I really like it. I was emailing the guy for a while - back & forth - about his dungeon hexographer that he's developing. Months ago he told me it wouldn't be any time soon, but I hope it comes out eventually because I bet it will be as cool and as easy to use as Hexographer.

Yeah, I've used Hexographer and it's just so darn great. My only hesitation is that CC2 makes really beautiful maps.
I'll have to look into Hexographer a bit more and then flip a coin.

Well, I wouldn't want to sway anyone's opinion, but I just but Hexographer and their Dungeon mapping program to use in my hobby publishing and so far, they are doing everything I need them to do.

Yeah, it looks like the program to use. It is much more intuitive than the CC2. Simple is good.
(and btw thanks for picking up the module, I appreciate it.)

I'm using the free version of Dungeonographer and it's pretty sweet. Maybe I'll get if for Christmas!

Depends on if you've been a good boy!

I think I'll get the full version to use offline. But I'm wondering if it will draw decent castle walls? Anybody know this?

"Their Dungeon mapping program"??!!
So the fella that made Hexographer finally finished his Dungeonographer?? IF so, I'm going to go buy it pronto.

I love Hexographer for wilderness, huge "area" maps. I've made city maps using Hexographer and it worked fine but was a little tricky.
