Part 2: Interview With the Devil

Postby sniderman » Sun Jan 25, 2015 7:52 pm

The five of you follow Chief Perry down a short hallway until you come to a door labelled "Interview Room."

"We don't normally have much call for this room," Perry says as he unlocks the door. "It's used primarily for interviews and interrogations when needed. It's the most secure place here, and we've taken some further steps to lock it down even more."

Image

You enter through the door on the southern-most wall. Inside is a narrow room with four chairs -- three in front of a large window and one in the corner. A large steel door is next to the window with a keypad set in the wall next to it. Through the window is a large featureless room with another large steel door in the back wall. There are three squat benches as well as three chairs. The chair nearest to the window faces the room you're in and is apparently bolted to the floor. It's also much sturdily built with leather straps to hold someone's arms in place. It reminds you all of "Ol' Sparky."

"I know the restraints are a bit much, but I'm not taking any chances with that maniac," Perry says. He taps the window. "Two inches thick and bulletproof. Nothing will get in or out of that room. Baxter will be brought in by two guards and will be strapped in that chair. You can speak to him for 10 minutes at which point we'll escort him out and back into the transport vehicle. We'll bring him in now, so make yourself comfortable."

Perry gets on his radio and instructs the guards to bring Baxter in.

[[Let me know where everyone will be seated or standing. Perry will not answer any questions at this time.]]

Lucas still doesn't trust the security of this place. "At the moment, I'm less concerned with questioning Baxter as I am that that door into the interrogation room is giving me a bad feeling," says Lucas. Lucas stands next to the door leading into this viewing room with his back to the wall, keeping his eyes on the door through witch Baxter is about to be lead through.

((When the jailers lead Baxter through the door, can you describe what Lucas might be able to see? Is it a room on the other side? Is of a hallway? Does it open to outside where a transport bus sits? Please describe anything Lucas might see, with a perception check if necessary, as that door, and what might be on the other side of it, is Lucas's focus right now.))

Following Lucas into the Interview Room, Web moves to the far side of the room, claiming the corner seat (with the expectation that he can always scoot it up).

He wonders aloud: “I wonder if Baxter knows what the ‘L’ is for?”

He pulls out his phone to google directions to Fenton's Funeral Home.

Magnus will be standing behind the three chairs. He'll want to ask Baxter about the details of the "demon" tormenting him, when he started seeing the demon, what it looks like, what it commands him to do (if anything), and why he is scared of it.

Hal Armitage will also stay behind glass. He will sit in one of the chairs, his cane in both hands. It's good to sit.

When he gets the opportunity, he will as Baxter to describe the demon that haunts him:

Hello Mr Baxter, may I call you Logan? I'm professor Armitage from out at G.U.E. Tech. What can you tell me of this demon? He he got a name? When did he first contact you and what does he tell you about this event? Has he warned you of other killings? Did he have anything to do with your incident forty years ago? Can you contact him for us? Is it possible to speak through you to him?

Jack
Feels the Devil may visit us, wonders if he could patch into the security cameras. Jack seems deep in thought. First off are there cameras visible? If so I will ask if it is possible to monitor them from the interrogation room? I have a feeling whomever committed the current murders may try something.

"At the moment, I'm less concerned with questioning Baxter as I am that that door into the interrogation room is giving me a bad feeling," Lucas mutters under his breath. He stands next to the door leading into the viewing room with his back to the wall, keeping his eyes on the entryway in the far back of the interrogation room Baxter's about to enter.

Web moves to the far side of the room, claiming the corner seat (with the expectation that he can always scoot it up). Magnus stands behind the three chairs. Hal sit in one of the chairs, his cane in both hands.

Jack seems deep in thought. He glances about for any cameras in the area, and spies two -- one in the room you're in and one in the interrogation room Baxter's about to enter.

"Will you be monitoring the interview from another room?" Jack asks Perry. "I have a feeling whomever committed the current murders may try something."

Perry nods. "Yup. I was instructed to allow you to question Baxter without...interference. So I and one of my deputies will be monitoring these rooms -- sound off -- next door. There will be two guards with Baxter in the other room as well. We cannot have Baxter unattended at any time, so that's about as much privacy as I can offer. I'll step out now and signal the guards to bring Baxter in. You have 10 minutes with the prisoner." Perry leaves, shutting the door behind him.

After a few tense, quiet moments, the door on the far wall of the interrogation room opens. Lucas cranes his neck and narrows his eyes to try to tryto get a glimpse of what lies in the next room.

[[GENERAL check versus Lucas' Perception. Results:
Perception ability: 60 - Rolled 50 (SUCCESS) ]]

Through the door appears to be one of the holding cells. Since you're at the back of the building, you surmise Baxter has been brought in via some secured back entrance and placed into a holding cell which then empties into this room.

Through the door shuffles an elderly man in an orange jumpsuit. He looks to be about 70 years old, balding, thin, and frail. His hands and legs are shackled, making walking difficult. The man -- recognizable as Logan Baxter from photos you've seen -- is accompanied by two of Perry's deputies acting as guards, both whom seem bored. They escort Baxter to the chair, and he crosses to it and sits without a word. The guards start securing him in the chair. One guard appears disgusted to have to even touch the infamous killer, whereas the other seems bored with the assignment. The guards check the bonds and, satisfied he's secure, cross to stand behind him.

You now notice that Baxter's eyes are open widely, and they dart around as he inspects the room. Baxter's eyes stop shifting as he notices the five of you in the next room. He stares silently.

[[I'm making a GENERAL roll versus everyone's Perception here, but I won't list all of the numbers and results. And...Jack and Lucas make it]]

Jack crosses to Lucas. "That guy's nearly paralyzed with terror," Jack mutters. Lucas turns and nods in agreement.

Hal clears his throat.

"Hello Mr Baxter, may I call you Logan?" Hal says. "I'm Professor Armitage from out at G.U.E. Tech."

[[SPECIFIC check versus Hal's Personality with a 5% penalty. Results:
Personality ability: 40 - Rolled 14 - Margin of Success: 26
Action Table results: 26 "Attack Margin" cross-indexed with Column 2 "Ability Checks" = H result (HIGHLY POSITIVE REACTION) ]]

Baxter's eyes lock onto Hal.

"Logan, what can you tell me of this demon?" Hal asks.

Baxter begins to babble: "They think I’m makin’ it up, but I’m not! Seven’s the one what killed them rangers! Told me it was gonna happen, and then it did. Told me I was next to die! Then told me everybody else in town will die!"

Baxter lowers his head and speaks barely louder than a whisper.

"Seven's coming for me. Then Seven's coming for you all..."

[[OK, the interview is now underway. To keep this scene moving quickly, for your next move you can make two "actions". Asking a question is an action. Doing something else (online research, leaving the room, etc.) is an action. So if you want to ask two questions, that's two actions. Just hammer out the two actions/questions you'd like to do/ask for this next "round".]]

Webb considers: not an “L” a “7”

Not bothering to introduce himself, but in a calm and cordial a voice as he can manage, Webb asks two questions:

1: “Mr. Baxter, surely you can understand the hesitancy of people believing you have knowledge of these killings –can you offer any specifics that wouldn’t otherwise be known that this … Seven is responsible?”

2: “And do you know why Seven killing people, and why it wants to kill you; and us?”

Hal

Can you tell me more about how you first met Seven?

Hal will research his anthropological notes for a demon or entity named Seven.

Magnus waits for a break in the questioning.

"Mr. Baxter, can you tell me what form this 'Seven' appears in to you? What does it look like? And one more question if you would be so kind - is it possible Seven commanded you to kill those men? Surely that would be understandable, in fear for your life at that moment, to do what the creature demanded?"
