Magic-Wizards- based on Magic card game.

Postby Blood axe » Sun Feb 27, 2011 4:09 am

A magic system loosely based on the magic gathering card game.

White Wizards- healing, good,light
Black- evil, death, undead
Green- animals, nature, plants
Blue- illusions, air, water
Red- fire, combat, chaos

Lesser mages that dabble in all colors, versatile- but weaker than those who specialize.

---------------------

Nothing too complicated- Id just divide the current spells into the appropriate category.

I think someone else did this on the old GG forum. :?:

If interested in my take on this idea, check out Five Color Magic over at my blog.

One thing that works out nicely is that the colors in M:tG compare rather nicely to the colors of the five basic dragons in LL. A little tweaking from the M:tG concept is needed (lightning moving from red to blue, for instance) but it's not a stretch at all. And it makes sense from a D&D perspective and not just a "let's do magic like that card game does."

Currently, we're working on a homebrew with magic based on this system and are excited about the possibilities. It's a big change from LL and standard D&D games, but this idea works pretty nicely in the standard systems as well. And it doesn't take a ton of effort to implement.

This could be very cool - as you can guess from my avatar, I've used M:tG for inspiration.
Bloodaxe, do you envision this just replacing magic users, or replacing clerics as well?
Kilgore, I like what you've done with the PDF spell lists, even if I don't recognise all the spells,

Thanks! All the spells on that version of the list are from Labyrinth Lord core and AEC, so nothing should be out of the ordinary. What might be throwing you is the fact that we took reversed versions of reversible spells and made them their own separate spell for this. No reversible spells here.

As for clerics and the spell list, the assumption was that all the standard spell caster classes would be removed and replaced with five color-based spell caster classes. The list includes cleric, magic-user, illusionist, and druid spells. I happen to like the way it results in five different flavors of spell caster, each of which is distinct but more or less equally "usable."

I have no doubt that anyone who uses this will adjust the list to their tastes. And we made an effort to make the number of spells equal. Some of them were sort of forced into their category. The list we use in our own game is similar to this but not the same. Some spells we tweaked the name and fluff to suit the color category better but kept the mechanics the same. Other spells were dropped, and some new ones were added.

I like it. Green are kind of Druids. Blue are kind of illusionists. White are kind of Clerics.
Kind of, but not exactly. ;)

Has anyone ever made an rpg where you are a sorcerer king and you lead armies of magical creatures into battle across the multiverse? The whole idea behind Magic: the Gathering is pretty awesome really.
