Well for the first time in a long time I got up this morning and there was no dodgy new accounts for me to block, so perhaps it's done the trick.

I hope so! It's been several hours and no new spam accounts. We usually get several each day.

Yep, nothing at all. That suggests to me that most spam accounts were software generated rather than done manually. If so, it might explain why so many of them joined and didn't post.

Yeah, I'm thinking that too. Many never even confirmed their accounts.
