Superpowered character types

Postby Atomic Ray » Sat Apr 07, 2012 8:53 pm

Which is your go to or favorite type for gaming?

If it matters in your decision let us consider a street sweeper level game...those hero types who are in the trenches of a given big city fighting the hard fight and working through the daily grind of keeping the bad guys down and out.

So not your world moving icons but certainly valued and important heroes with significant abilities/powers.

Considering running a PbP superhero game, but want to field the potential before I invest too much time into it.

So please let me know if you are interested.

I am planning to apply experience and levels but with more appropriate rewards such as reputations, followers/supporters, strongholds/hideouts/safe-houses, side kicks/apprentices, and boosts to existing power levels/effects.

I don't have a favorite. I've played all of the above back in the 80s through Champions, which is my favorite superhero RPG. They all have pluses and minuses but a good GM and good PCs and it doesn't matter. Just like I don't prefer Batman to Iron Man to Superman to the Fantastic Four to Flash to the X-Men to Metamorpho to anyone else. They all work well with the proper writer/artist combo.

BTW, Champions is my personal favorite superhero RPG, having played later Heros variants (ugh), Villains and Vigilantes, DC Heroes, Marvel Super Heroes RPG, and Heroes Unlimited (and maybe one or two others). The Marvel one was cool too.

Agreed, I have always held Champions 4th Ed on high and use it to this day in some measure :)

I was presenting the format of themed hero types to follow the format of Old School Gaming :)

In the beginning super games you did not create ultra well balanced characters, they were specialists.

and is taken for naught -
then the Pact is to Avenge.

The idea would be to celebrate the Old School Gaming effort put on by Goblin G!

:)

Most likely the basic GORE with considerations for powers (I am working with the existing spells, abilities, etc. to build a superhero powers base) as well as the advanced supplement's data.

Characters would start off as new heroes, side kicks leaving the nest, etc.

Roll stats as normal, 4D6 best 3D6 placed where you like.

Include Luck stat!

Roll once on the core powers chart, find your primary power set...these will provide a power, a few stats bonuses, color details.

Pick once from the secondary powers chart or random roll twice...these choices will provide the supporting powers to compliment the core set.

Example: Joe Smith
(core power) Powerhouse...added Strength 3D6+3, added Constitution 2D6+2, added Hit Points +10, natural armor class 03, increased size/weight +1D3' and +75lbs per extra foot (2' = +150lbs)
(pick secondary power) Regeneration...1HP per round
...Joe becomes Samson!

Image
STR +16 (4,3,6+3)
CON +9 (4,3+2)
HP +10 regenerates 1HP per round
AC 03 (natural)
Hght/Wght +3' +225lbs

So there will be plenty of room for stats boosts, well beyond the 18 standard limits.

I picked Martial Artist, Psionics, and Gadgeteer... but I was really torn with the morphing one and the magical one, too.
SUCCESSFUL "TRADES" with: tumblingdice x2, Blood axe, and Kipper! ~ thanks to all of you! :D

It is tough I know...I could easily go with any of the above...I am an easy target for post apoc/mutant or superhero games

I was mulling the thought of classes of superheroes.

The basic fighter, magic user, druid, etc. but replaced with

Brick
Martial Artist
Energy Projector
etc.

Levels, special abilities, etc.

The only real difference would be baseline hit points...a fair starting value that can slowly be built upon.

Str + Con + and special = Hit Points

2nd level +1DHP.....Brick 1D10, Martial Artist 1D8, and 1D6 being the standard

Any thoughts?
