PETMAN and other Real-World Robots

Do you guys pay attention to emerging robotics? I like to keep an eye on what's being developed, but I am not a programmer or engineer. It seems that science fiction-esq humanoid and animal-like robots are a growing reality. How soon until robot soldiers not unlike our favorite androids will be patrolling the streets?

Darpa's PetMan Robot is particularly interesting to me. It can walk, run, jump and climb, and looks pretty human when clothed.

How about NASA's "Valkyrie" that is designed as a disaster response robot?
