The night passes uneventfully. The Instant Fortress is nearly as comfortable as the Inn back in Bissel.

When you wake the next morning, you pack up the horses and then exit the Instant Fortress, waiting for Dieter to say the word that opens the door. When you've all quit the building, he says another word of power and the fortress collapses back into a metal cube, which the mage then pockets.

You continue on the trail. Within a few miles of riding... encounter [1d20] = 16 a war party of hobgoblins attacks from the northwest, racing down the steep hills towards you. There appear to be nearly eighty of them: a chief barking orders, two lieutenants making sure they are followed, and the rest attacking with polearms, spears, and hand weapons, with a large group readying arrows!

You have time to react!

Grimes - Fighter

Grimes snickers and says "I think we have em' outnumbered. I almost feel sorry for em'" Pointing toward the leaders he says "I could dismount and go invisible and try to pop the big ones, maybe the others will lose the will to fight." He smiles a sly smile and says "Or we could run?"

OOC: Hmmm... my instinct tells me that we could prob kill a bunch in a lucky first attack and maybe the rest would scatter. Or we could run like hell.

"Bah, a bit o' fun ta warm us up, I say!"

Dandy, waiting until the last possible moment, slams the earth with Whelm, sending a shock wave towards the approaching horde.

Castinus, well rested, in better spirits and not wanting to be left out, fires an arrow with his bow of doubling at the nearest lieutenant type in range.

Grimes - Fighter

Grimes, seeing the others getting ready to attack, leaps off his horse toward the back and winks at Acquire as he does. "Be careful." and then he uses his ring to go invisible, then he'll move slightly away from the party, waiting for a chance to try and advance on the leaders when close enough. He'll stay to the side though in case someone uses a mass affect spell.

OCC: Please update Dieters spell list with this old entry. I can see him needing fireball in this situation. :D

Dieter - Mage

Happy that he as able to come to an agreement with the shoppe proprietors Dieter will trade the items and then make for the monastery to find his comrades (and pick up his horse).

OCC: Dieter is good to go. Let's replace the memorized "rope trick" with "fireball", I did not foresee coming across the magic fort. :)

Hobgoblin Ambush!

The horde of hobgoblins is 60' - 90' away, with their archers preparing a strike.

INITIATIVE baddies [1d6] = 3 party [1d6] = 5

Dieter utilizes his Wand of Ice to bring an Ice Storm on the horde. The 40' radius engulfs the entire war party.

Castinus prepares to fire an arrow at a lieutenant but holds off as all lieutenants are dead.
Grimes disappears
Acquaire watches

A huge majority of the hobgoblin war party, including all leaders, are killed by falling hailstones. The rest of the hobgoblins try to flee. The area is pounded by the hailstones, some of which roll down to your feet. They are the size of gnome heads and hard as rock. Most of the hailstones that reach you are bloodied. The storm continues for a full ten minutes, killing nearly everything in its radius.

A half dozen hobgoblins survive, barely and are fleeing back up into the crags above.

Grimes - Fighter

Grimes becomes visible again and gazes wide eyed at Dieter. "Wow. Deets, that was somethin'." Once the storm has passed, Grimes will walk to the remains and search the leaders.
