Forest fiend is the common name given to these arboreal predators. The creatures are seven foot tall bipeds. Their bodies are covered in scales that can change color like a chameleon, allowing them to surprise opponents on 1-4 on a d6. The creatures are lone hunters that use their chameleon powers to ambush their prey. They usually keep small shrines in their lairs containing trophies of their hunts. The forest fiends prefer to fight with hand weapons but have long razor sharp talons on the end of their four fingered hands. Four mandibles peal back from the forest fiend’s mouth to reveal jaws filled with pointed teeth. Small recessed yellow eyes peer out from the beast’s pinched face.

Inactive, the Mouth of the Wood resembles a large tree stump about 3-4 feet tall and of similar diameter, covered with a typical assortment of rot, moss, and the like. It often gets its first attack by surprise (1-5 on 1d6) due to this camouflage.

When it attacks, the Mouth of the Wood typically opens its huge mouth located on the top of the "stump" and lashes outwards with its tentacle-like tongue. Any character hit by this tongue is immediately stuck to its viscous surface and drawn inwards towards the central mouth and bitten in the next round (no further attack roll is required by the Mouth of the Wood to maintain its grip and bite the victim). The tongue is only AC6 but is quite tough and requires 10hp damage to sever with a bladed weapon (these hp are separate from the creature's overall hp total). Anyone attempting to do so, however, has a 1-4 in 1d6 chance with each hit of having their weapon stuck to the creature's tongue and thus rendered unusable!

Although it prefers to remain sedentary for the most part, the Mouth of the Wood is able to lift itself up out of the ground on three thick "root"-like legs and move around in order to trample nearby victims.
