Dark Dungeons

Dark Dungeons is the Retro-Clone version of BECMI rules as Labyrinth Lord is the Retro-Clone of the B/X rules. Some of the example characters and the name itself is a riff on the old Jack Chick tract attacking D&D.

I never bought the Rules Cyclopedia or the BECMI rule sets, so I don't know how closely the two mimic each other, but I happen to like it for its Skysail approach to Spelljammer.

I'm using my cell phone to post this, but I'll add the link in a few hours when I get home. I was just starting this tread to generate some opinions. Like it? Hate it? Would you use it in addition to LL/AEC?

Dark Dungeons seems like a nice way to extrapolate on LL. I like it. :)

If anything, his houserules of the skills make the system better than the ones in BECMI which could end up replacing a thief with any other character with enough skills and the right skill choices. That isn't possible in Dark Dungeons which is a huge bonus in my books.

I read through Dark Dungeons a couple times and I liked a lot of it, the lack of level limits, the skill system and the immortal rules really stood out, but I like my basic game to be basic so I toss it in with BECMI and RC as too complicated to fit my "basic" gaming style.

OK, I guess 10 MONTHS is a bit more than a few hours later, but Dark Dungeons has expanded into Darker Dungeons! (And Darkest Dungeons is on the way!)

Link Time: http://www.gratisgames.webspace.virginmedia.com/

I will be downloading Darker Dungeons as soon as I click Submit, but I came across Darker Dungeon as he was asking for art from the Arts and Crafts Forums at GiantitP Forums (Home of Order of the Stick). The Dark Dungeon rules were pretty good, so I am looking forward to Darker Dungeons. I get the impression Darkest Dungeons might be a GURPS clone, but I'm not sure. Maybe Palladium's RIFTS? I guess I'll have to wait a bit.

I read over this awhile ago (Dark Dungeons I mean) and it does take the game to levels I don't want to tread. I like to run games where the characters are just average joes that enter dangerous places due to goals of fame and fortune. The rules though are very solid and built of many years of work from TSR. It could always be played without the super hero aspects that come later though.

Here's a good breakdown from the author himself.

One really odd change in Darker Dungeons is the "reversal" of Magic-Users and Elves - that is, elves become the squishy casters and MUs become the armor clad tough-guys. As a traditionalist, I don't agree with that change at all. It's almost wilfully done to break with tradition.

I must emphasize that I REALLY like Dark Dungeons, but I'm not a big fan of the changes in Darker Dungeons and will likely be less enthusiastic about Darkest Dungeons. The original, though? An excellent RC substitute.
