It is a little embarrassing...

It is a little embarrassing, after having published material for LL for over two years now, I finally got a copy of the “game-of-origin” over the summer (I played AD&D back in the day). It really has opened up a whole new world of LL to me. In addition, I am even much more impressed with what an excellent job Dan has done translating the original.

Yeah, I'm a little nerd-challenged and about five years behind everyone else in the OSR.

I have a quote for just such an occasion... someone posted it to my blog last month... (paraphrased slightly and definitely tongue-in-cheek - I don't mean this anymore than I took it seriously when the vitriol-thrower was aimed my way).

some asshole wrote:You are a traitor to the OSR and good gaming. No shit you aren’t OSR – you just produce regurgitated crap and sneak in promotions for crappy storytelling games and wow-wanna-be RPGs between your professed love for the dungeons.
Go back to making white boxes – yet another thing the OSR doesn’t need because we have the originals, thank you very much.

Congratz on the purchase, John.

Beautiful, aren't they? By far my favourite edition of the game (both in terms of rules, aesthetics, and presentation)! They just scream "play me!". You know, the only thing i would change about LL is giving it a more imitative cover along the lines of the original books (heck, its an imitative set of rules, why not give it an imitative cover harkening back to the original source material?).

The theory is, only people familiar with the original would buy something "too derivative" when it comes to visual design.

There are other legal concerns as well, but I also felt that for LL to have legs in the long run it needed it's own aesthetic.

While I like the look of the game-of-origin, I prefer the new LL look - it sets LL apart. Plus, I am friends with everyone involved with LL, so I am a bit biased. ;)

Well, I'll whole-heartedly agree to disagree. :P
