How do you prefer your tabletop spell casters?

Now I know this is predominately a site for old-school RPGs but I feel like asking about everyone's opinions on what sorcerers and spell casters in general should be like. Right now I'll just post a link to the original thread so you can read the question from there. You might even find some of their answers interesting.

I generally like them to be mad and drawing their power from some source that doesn't have their best interests in mind. I do like a given mages spells to follow a theme, like elements or death, but its not a problem if they've got all sorts of spells.
