Ideas for a Second Edition

For discussion of the original 1978 rules and for the revised second edition that is entering development.

I am a big fan of the grand crossover, but I can see some issues. Like you said there is a bit of a glut in the D&D in space genera at present. Personally I like to scavenge bits from games. I'm much more concerned about the actual compatibility issues. St&SP is a very different system from LL or MF, trying to shoehorn the game into the LL family would be difficult with out loosing much of it's charm. On the other hand coming out with a revised version of the original system so soon after its release might not be received well ( I know I would be less likely to buy it.)

The obvious solution of course is Starships & Spacemen GORE edition.

When I first heard about making S&S compatible with LL and MF, I was kind of excited. I thought that if such a thing was released, one could take it and start playing in more ways. You could use all of these different rules and make your own Shadowrun type game...maybe even a Spelljammer type setting, all within the simplicity of the rules. As for the concern about a Sci-Fi/D&D saturated market, I cannot help you there because I don't know your ideas for your business growth. I created Star Wars - Galactic Adventures which lets us play Star Wars with simple D&D/LL type rules, but I have no intention of mixing mutants and elves in a Star Wars setting. I think if you make it compatible, it would be great to own and then I can have worlds of super-science and sorcery. I could have games where dwarves and elves fly off in spaceships across the galaxy. I guess I could just have tons of possibilities.

Thanks!

I third that motion.

The original game could do with a make-over, but I too think that a LL-compatible version would only strengthen the GG brand name. I strongly suspect within the current scene there are more LL (D&D) fans than S&S fans. The latter would no doubt prefer a revised version that was faithful to the original, and doing that would be a nice tribute to the those fans and the original author. But the usefulness of the product would be vastly increased by making it compatible with LL. Is doing both options an option Dan?

Doing both may be an option. No matter what the original game will remain in print. So if an LL/MF compatible version were released, would people want standard class and level up type of characters, or something more like MF where hp are more or less fixed. For example, starting hp is equal to CON. Or, 1d8 per level. I could see it going either way, but obviously it will majorly affect the power level of the game.

I hope this is still on the radar! I'm still very interested in seeing a second edition of this produced!

Also if its not on the agenda to do a version that is compatible with Labyrinth Lord, how about a version that could work with Timemaster/Rotworld???

I was actually going to post an update! I've turned my attention to the second edition of this game now. I had to decide how I wanted to approach it. Of course the original version will always be available, but I wanted to expand some of the adventuring material and the best way it seems to me to do that is to make the game compatible with LL/MF. Now, there will be differences, not unlike how there are some differences between MF and LL, so I'll have conversion notes in the back of the book. Since the original system is so inspired by OD&D it seemed like going the LL route would be better than using the action table system, which is more skill-based. I'm also able to preserve everything about S&S that makes it unique.

I'm hoping to have a playtest draft ready within the next few weeks, so I'll be looking for playtesters.

Keen! Making second ed. LL/MF compatible seems like a natural fit.
