One Hour Dungeon Mapping

the Planet Algol blog started this "how much dungeon can you map in an hour" meme that a few of the old school blogs have been trying out.

Because of this, I realized that I wasn't sure how long it really took me to make a map - I usually do other things while mapping, so it isn't really focused time.

So I tried it out today before heading out for dinner and Carcassonne.

One hour of mapping later, and here's the raw scan of the result.

Because I was on a time limit, I didn’t put in my usual cross-hatching background. And then I discovered something. I found an hour almost too long. I ended up going back and adding details and thickening walls and finally having time to scan the map in that hour.

And here is the same dungeon after 20 minutes of post-production in Photoshop.

Wow, far better than I could do with ten times the time.

I have to say...on a little unrelated subject...thanks Dyson for all of the work in those geomorphs you made. I put them on my site (giving you full credit of course) to generate random maps and even rotated them to give even more possibilities in randomness. Your geomorphs (and Risus Monkey's) really cut down my adventure creation time drastically and give my dungeons a more rugged feel than a "random dungeon generator) does.

I'm stunned by how much "legs" my geomorphs have proven to have. There are five or six sources of geomorphs out there now that are all compatible with mine (some have gone so far to call my design the "industry standard"), even some post-apocalyptic city geomorphs. Plus a bunch of random generators like yours that use mine, mine & risus monkey's, or in the case of Dave's Mapper, all the available geomorphs.

Boggling.

Hell, one guy recently sent me a photo of a map he made using all the geomorphs he could get - printed out and done physically on his table.

Post Apocalyptic!!!! Help! Where is the link to those? That would totally kick ass when making my Mutant Future games.

All the geomorphs using the same design as mine that I'm aware of are linked to from my Geomorphs page.

Also, the post-apocalyptic city geomorphs are available as one of the options using Dave Millar's mapper.
