Background: Balfa hails from a dirt-poor Hill Dwarf clan from somewhere in the Kingdom of Denmark. He has long abandoned it in search for fortune. His banded mail armor belong to his grandsire and was the only inheritance he got before he departed. For years he has wandered the lands as a mercenary, guard and sellsword. Oftentimes he did things to survive he is not proud of and never talks about. When he does say something he tells of getting on a merchant ship and ending up in Iberia where he fought for the crowns of Aragon and Castille, both against the Moors (which he learned to hate) but often against each other. Tired of the constant war and bickering of this turbulent peninsula he headed north to the coast, in hopes of catching the next ship headed to Northern Europe. In the mountainous regions of the Basque Country he made friends with a local tribe and helped that ancient people in resolving an ogre problem. That adventure cost Balfa his favorite helm, his favorite sword, and nearly cost him his life too; but in the giant's lair he found a pair of boots touched by sorcery that allow a man to rise upwards to the air and come back down again by simply wishing it!
With some gold and a sarracen-style basque scimitar as parting gifts, Balfa said goodbye to the hill people and finally found a ship heading Northeast. Now he finds himself in Aquitaine, but a stone-throw away from that cursed warring peninsula. How he got to be there is another story, which involves a certain ship's captain not paying back his loans and having his vessel impounded.
Oh well...rumors say there's some stirrings in Toulouse. Might as well check the city out. Who knows? Maybe Aquitaine will treat Balfa better than Iberia did.
Balfa is quite fond of drinking, carousing and quite the ladies fan. He misses seeing the short plumpness of the she-dwarves of the lands he left behind. Luckily, height-challenged human wenches have proven to be a good substitute, and once there was this unusually tall halfling girl back in Barcelona...
