Spellburn.

"Blood aids sorcery."

From Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG from Goodman Games.

A magic-user sacrifices part of his soul, some of his strength, or life energy to cast a spell in an emergency.

It has some potential in LL. Possibly give up HP or points in a stat to cast a spell. One point per spell level. Maybe make a save or the loss (or part of it) is permanent.
That could make sure it is only used only in emergencies.
To defend: This is the Pact.
But when life loses its value,
and is taken for naught -
then the Pact is to Avenge.

"Blood aids sorcery"

Awesome quote :D

I actually ran a one-shot once where the only way for MUs to cast spells was by sacrificing hit points. 1 hp per spell level, as you suggest. I phrased it as fatigue, rather than actual physical damage. The flip side was that they didn't need to memorize spells, they could choose on the fly what to cast. It worked really well, and is definitely something I'd try again.
