Tower Assault

Einar pulls his hood up and disappears. He attempts to scale the wall (d100, 70, SUCCESS).

Grimes goes up the rope (DEX check, d20, 9 SUCCESS) and pulls himself up. Dieter follows him up (DEX check, d20, 6, SUCCESS).

Furuk and Dandy wait for their turns on the rope below.

....

Einar is on the roof and gets in position behind the Darkling Captain.

(secret roll) One of the lizardmen notices the grapple as Grimes and Dieter make it to the top! He alerts the others as the halfling crests the top!

INITIATIVE! baddies, d6, 1; party d6, 1, SIMULTANEOUS ACTION!!!

Grimes launches himself at his foe (d20, 14+3=17, HIT, dmg d6+3, 6+3=9) and stabs him as the lizardman (LA1) brings his clubs around (d20, 1, CRITICAL MISS) but the club slips from his hand.

The other three lizardmen archers raise their crossbows and fire at the halfling (d20x3, 6, 12, 16, MISS, MISS, HIT, dmg d6, 2) and one of the crossbow bolts connects.

The Darkling Captain moves in but he's far enough across the tower, it will take a round to bridge the distance. Einar sees his opportunity and strikes (d20, 19, BACKSTAB HIT, DMG d8x2, 8x2=16) and gravely wounds the Darkling captain. He yells at the other lizardmen in a language you don't understand, but by context you can guess is "The gong, you fools" or something.

Dieter crawls over the crenelation.

Round 2 (ooc: I've decided to do two rounds of action since you gave me two rounds of commands)

INITIATIVE baddies d6, 3; party d6, 5 PARTY HAS INITATIVE

Dieter casts sleep on the lizardmen and Darkling captain (effective HD 2d8, 8+4=12) and all five creatures fall to the ground, with magical sleep overcoming them.

Furuk and Dandy are still at ground level. When the Darkling captain cried out the talk in the room on the first floor stopped momentarily but resumed after a few seconds. (secret roll) It doesn't seem to have attracted any wandering patrols either.

Grimes - Fighter

Grimes silently curses at the pain of the bolt, and motions to those remaining down below that the coast is clear. Once the group is up top, he'll remove the bolt and address his wound quickly with a cloth.

He smiles at Einar and Dieter and says "fine teamwork, fellas! Nice job! Now what's next? Kill these guys? Or do we want to keep one alive?"

OOC: A couple thoughts.
1. I think we should disable the gong now. Carefully, and with all helping, let's take it down, and once we clear the tower, toss the damn thing in the water. Any way to keep someone from using it.
2. We can go down through the trapdoor, but do we want one person down below outside just in case anyone tries to flee? Grimes will volunteer if we decide to do that.
3. We need to be on the lookout for patrols, they may possibly stop here, and we need to be ready just in case.

Dieter - Mage

Good job Grimes. He will say as he takes out his dagger and starts dispatching lizard men (starting with the darkling).

Furuk nods at Dandy that he is going up. He takes the rope and begins the climb to the top.

While cutting throats (with a maniacal smile) Dieter will also search for goodies on the baddies.

OCC: Spell deducted.

Dandy and Furuk join the others at the top of the tower.

Throats are slit. You find three more armbands (worth 100GP each) and the darkling's sword is a long sword +1.

The tower is quiet. The gong disabled (the platter removed from the frame) and it's value estimated (it's worthless, low-grade brass).

Image

The tower roof is flat and surrounded by a four-foot crenellated wall. The trapdoor in the southeast corner is bolted shut, the bolt on the roof side: it will be simple to unbolt it. Next to it, an iron handle juts from the floor/roof, its purpose unclear.

In the middle of the roof is a wheeled catapult and a stack of ten large, round stones. The catapult seems like it could be turned in any direction.

Grimes - Fighter

Grimes looks at the catapult, then at the domed structures and chuckles ominously... "Too bad we don't know what's in there. We could drop something on our lizard friends here...."

Grimes curiosity wants to grab the lever, but he decides against it. "What do you all think? Go in and finish this off? Once we kill the guards we may be able to get some rest. Who knows?"

Grimes pauses and thoughtfully scratches his chin.. clearly trying to think of some way to use the catapult to harrass our antagonists.

Indeed friend, I have thought long and hard what to do with such a toy too. He will say to Grimes looking at the catapult. Alas, I think our main option here is a cold blooded assault on the floors below. The current level of health for some gives me pause though.
