Desert of Desolation series

Anyone here have any experience with the Desert of Desolation series, either as a player or DM? What did you think of them?

As one who loves desert-themed adventures I thought picking them up would be a no-brainer. Trying to read through them, though, I'm just not feeling the love. Maybe it's the setup. Maybe it's the artwork. Maybe it's the fact that I didn't discover them when I was 13 years old like I did the other modules and products I'm comparing them to, like the Desert Nomad series, The Lost City, and The Emirates of Ylaruam.

Am I missing something?

Played through them back in the day. Enjoyed them at the time, but with hindsight they were slightly on rails. However, they do hold some good memories. First off is spending an inordinate amount of time working out how to translate the strange script used in the adventure. Secondly is a paladin PC announcing to the guardians of a temple when asked what we had come to do: "We have come to defile your temple!" That did not go down well at all ...

No, I imagine that didn't make for a warm reception. :)

Based on the answers so far, and the dozens of answers I didn't receive, I think they're going up for sale on Amazon. Thanks to everyone for your input.

I really enjoyed the capstone of the series - the Lost Tomb of Martek. Ditch the rest and just run that part and it rocks. I even one-upped it and increased the number of side-adventures required in the room where you get sent to little sub-dimensions to complete miniquests in order to continue.

There are some reviews of the individual modules that make up that Supermodule on DF:

I3 Pharaoh (Hickman & Hickman 1982)
I4 Oasis of the White Palm (Meyers & Hickman, 1983)
I5 Lost Tomb of Martek (Hickman, 1983)

Hope that helps!
