The paladin kicks in the door and rushes in blindly, looking for a target!

Image

He rushes headlong to the downward stairs dex check [1d20] = 14 and can't stop himself in time. He tumbles down the stair, his plate, shield, and sword making quite the clatter. (It will take a round for Morgan to get up and gather his things) The others rush in behind him (once they realize that he is charging) and are able to check themselves at the stair but are distracted by his fall (GM speak: no surprise)

Within, at the bottom of the stair, lurid light from a flaming cresset and a glowing brazier full of charcoal reveals a 30 'x 20' chamber containing a rack, iron maiden, cage, and all the other unspeakable devices common to a torture chamber. Two adjacent 10' square alcoves, one to the south and one east, are barred.

A barely conscious man on a rack looks at you, his head lolling on his slack neck. The bugbear, clad in chain with a leather jack, picks up his flail, while the Turnkey, a huge man wearing chain grabs his wicked axe and says, Well, what do we have here? through a vile grin.

Thurwin - Wizard

Thurwin shouts "MORGAN! I'm coming!" and he pushes his way frantically past others in the doorway, trying to get to his brother's side!

Thurwin will cast sleep at whichever hooligan is closer to his brother, the bugbear or the turnkey, or both, if they are in target range.

CALMERT: Cleric
The Gnome hates the human, and hates the bugbear even more. He vigorously casts BLESS on his party! "St. Cuthbert guide us!"

OOC: For your convenience:
Bless fills the caster's allies with courage, but does not affect
enemies within the affected area of 20' x 20'. Each ally gains
+1 on attack and damage rolls and a +1 morale bonus.

Cast so far:
1 first level (CLW), and 1 second level (Bless). **If this is incorrect, let me know!
SUCCESSFUL "TRADES" with: tumblingdice x2, Blood axe, and Kipper! ~ thanks to all of you! :D

Once through, Bror ignores his surroundings as the chamber is well known to the dwarf. His eyes, two sharp glints peering out from under the rim of his battered helm, they quickly search until he sees the Turnkey. His blood boils and a fearsome rage takes hold. With caution and reason to the wind, Bror rushes the object of his hate, his shield ready and his axe swinging for a blow.

To hit with axe: [1d20+4] = 11+4 = 15, damage: [1d6+4] = 2+4 = 6

OOC: I've included the bonus from the cleric's Bless

"Blast!" Morgan shouts. "Aaaargh! Ow! Son of a--I mean, By the Hand of Heironeous! If the Master Sergeant had ever seen that, he'd have had my hide."

The paladin gets to his feet as quickly as possible. He'll attack the turnkey at the earliest opportunity.

Caydon - Rogue
Seeing that only Morgan's pride is wounded, Caydon suppresses a grin. If a clear shot is available, he launches an arrow at the Turnkey. If no shot presents itself he will try to fade back and work the shadows, hoping for a backstab. As a last resort he will come out swinging with his crowbar.

Shadow of the Turnkey

INITIATIVE baddies [1d6] = 1 party [1d6] = 1 simultaneous action, fun

Calmert starts chanting and St Cuthbert smiles on the party.
Effric goes after the Turnkey scimitar [1d20+2] = 19+2 = 21 dmg [1d8+2] = 8+2 = 10, his curved blade biting through armor.
the Bugbear goes after Effric monster attack [1d20] = 17 dmg [1d8] = 7 smacking him hard with the flail.
Thurwin's spell puts the bugbear, lights out. The beast falls, snoring before he hits the ground.
Morgan tries to recover.
Caydon's bow sings bow [1d20+3] = 15+3 = 18 dmg [1d6+1] = 6+1 = 7 and the shaft is buried to the fletching.
Tavin performs acrobatics to aid his friend.
Calthas longbow [1d20+3] = 18+3 = 21 dmg [1d8+1] = 8+1 = 9
the Turnkey swings his mighty axe at charging Bror monster attack [1d20] = 19 and the blade buries in the dwarf's shoulder dmg [1d8+1] = 6+1 = 7!
Bror screams in agony and rage, his axe cleaving mail, rib, and heart and the source of his suffering dies by the dwarf's hand!

The torturer lies dead, Bror has his vengeance, Calmert's spell was wickedly effective, the bugbear i=lies snoring because of the young mage's spell.

Lurid light from a flaming cresset and a glowing brazier full of charcoal reveals a 30 'x 20' chamber containing a rack, iron maiden, cage, and all the other unspeakable devices common to a torture chamber. Two adjacent 10' square alcoves, one to the south and one east, are barred, their doors held fast by chain and padlock. Two prisoners are in each, obviously here to await the tender mercies of the torturers. Two female humans are in the south alcove, and two orcs in the east.

OC: Wow, that was great. I moved things around for dramatic reasons (and to let Bror get the final blow -- didn't want that going to an autopilot character).
