Chattin' about Lords of Creation

Postby boddynock » Thu May 31, 2012 6:51 pm

Today I finished off the short, but sweet collection of Lords of Creation material which which was the adventure module Omegakron. Not only did I want to pop on over and ring the good news, but I wanted to chat about the misplaced Lords of Creation by Tom Moldvay. I never played it when it came out (wasn't born yet) but looking back now it still looks awesome. You are characters, probably just skilled humans with a quirky power of seeing dimension beings no one else could, and then you're across the galaxy riding dinosaurs and fighting robots. It was sort of generic with suggested settings, but that was kind of a problem as it was also a little bit alien to gamers at the time. But now we can look back, maybe say hey! How neat was Lords of Creation?

It is pretty cool. I picked up a copy last year and you can definitely see the influence of Basic D&D in there.

I played Horn of Roland some 20 years ago and only have vague recollections but I can definitely say we had lots of fun.
I succesfully bought a copy a couple of years ago and went through the system, it was a simple and elegant game perfectly completed by the modules.

Bought mine back in the mid-to-late 1980's.

I always had a desire to see if I could convert Omegakron to some other SF or PA game, the setting seems really detailed.

Maybe I should pull it out and reread it, it's been at least 15 years.

I can't say that I am attracted by the rules, but the premise is %$#@ing awesome! You would start-off as a somewhat normal person, but as you progress, you can explore new worlds and realities, learn to control them like a god, and eventually become a creator-god to whole new realities! With the ability to travel through time, space and other dimensions, the possibilities with world-building are truly endless!!! Its like picking-up the Mini-Six book (with the other setting pamphlets wedged in it) and asking "So, what fiction should we play today?" and everyone replies "ALL OF THEM!!!".

If I was running a LoC campaign, my world-building formula would be simple: Mix 2 cups randomly chosen 80's cartoons (the good ones) with 11 tbsp of Heavy Metal-styled gratuity (sex, over-the-top violence, T&A, etc.), add some gran alcohol and cannabis to friends; bake for as long as needed. Voilà! Instant awesome!!! :o

I bought a copy when it first came out (I was in HS) but never played. I also have Horn of Roland but never got the other modules. For the life of me back then I couldn't figure out what to do with it.

I'd love to play the concept/setting now that I've got a clue (reading the World of Tiers and some Amber books helped) in terms of why it's different from other multiverse games. I doubt I'd use the rules, though. I might go Fate in one direction and a build on S&W WB in the other.

If you can locate any old issues of Avalon Hill's (AH) Heroes magazine from 1984 - 1986 there are some LoC articles, most of them by Tom Moldvay himself.

(As an aside, I remember creating a very small starter adventure for LoC when I tried to teach myself how to play. It was basically a dungeon crawl in a crashed UFO if I remember correctly. I really should get out my boxes and see if the notes are still in there.)

So I'm looking at my TimeMaster paperback (as well as the rest of the family including my "back in the day" Star Ace) and thinking "Pacesetter Lords of Creation could work".

The problem is Hasbro owns LoC IP and pretty much everything Avalon Hill ever produced.

They have licensed out the rights to publish some of the old wargames, but I can't see them EVER letting go of any RPG IP.

I suppose somebody could attempt to take the meta-setting concept and try to make a simulacrum of it though.

Would have to do something like Dark Dungeons and completely 100% rewrite all text, use different terminology, etc. because this far predates anything like the OGL. Make up some new title as well - "Masters of Infinity" or something.

In a way the whole concept of spacetime-hopping dimension lords reminds me of Dr. Who.
