Need Help! Still don't understand spell learning...

Hey,
I still don't get how spell learning is supposed to work...
So MUs get to choose for themselves 2 Lvl 1 and 1 Lvl 2 Spell for their spellbook. They "know"these spells, meaning they don't have to do the "Learn" check (AEC) and could potentially memorize them - well except for the Lvl 2 spell which the MU will not be able to use in any way until he reaches Lvl 3, right? (Why does he even have it, then?) The first problem is, though, that the AEC says you just don't have to roll for the two first Lvl spells. Does this mean you have a spell in you spellbook that you potentially will never understand (if you fail the test -... whenever you are supposed to do it...)
So how does acquiring or learning spells work? When do you actually do the "Learn-check"? What does "learning" mean in contrast to "having it in the spellbook"?`What does the Min. and Max Spell listing exactly mean and how do you apply it? I read somewhere that you are supposed to do all the learn checks for each first level spell right from the start (before the game even began), until you meet the Maximum and that these would be just the spells that you potentially could put into your spellbook IF you would somehow find them ingame? Is this the way it is supposed to be?
