Acolyte fight

INITIATIVE baddie d6, 5, party d6, 2 Baddie has initiative

The Acolyte attacks Grimes, enraged by his shield, (d20, 17, HIT, dmg d6+2, 2+2=4) raking the halfling with his claws.

Dieter flings a dart (d20, 15, HIT, dmg d4, 1) and just hits the acolyte.

Einar (autopilot) looses an arrow (d20, 8, MISS) but it flies wide.

Dandy (autopilot) throws his hammer (d20, 9, MISS) but it also fails to find its mark.

Grimes stikes back (d20, 15, HIT, dmg d6+3, 3+3=6) and nails the bugger.

Furuk also attacks (d20, 7, MISS) but misses.

Gatto (autopilot) also attacks (d20, 12, MISS) but can't connect.

Clarence, who doesn't need any prompting to defend his new charming friends, attacks (d20, 15, HIT, dmg d8+3, 8+3=11) and kills him with a blow of his long sword.

The Acolyte lies dead on the floor. Old linens scattered with him.

Behind the curtain is a large bed frame filled with grasses and furs. A dark wood cabinet is against the wall near the bed.

The Acolyte has nothing of value other than the usual armband (100GP). The bed is nice, with fresh sheets.

The cabinet is locked. Einar attempts to pick the lock (d100, 51, FAIL) but doesn't succeed. Someone will have to break the lock to open the cabinet.

Rubbing his wounds and clearly angry, Grimes says "Stand back!" And he'll take a whack at the cabinet. "Let's be quick, eh, fellas? We need to free that Elf."

Grimes tries to force the door (d6, 6, FAIL).

Gatto pushes him aside and gives it a shot. (d6, 2, SUCCESS) The lock breaks off with a smash of the hand axe. The cabinet doors swing open. Inside, among the other things, is a PIT VIPER.

(Secret roll) The party is surprised.

The Pit Viper automatically attacks Gatto (who opened the cabinet) (d20, 20, CRITICAL HIT, MAX DAMAGE) and bites the gnome. (SAVE vs POISON, d20, 7, FAIL) The gnome falls to the ground, foaming at the mouth. He's dead in an instant, glassy eyes staring into nothing.

The pit viper looks for another victim.

Actions?

INITIATIVE <<Pit Viper always has initiative>>

The pit viper hones in on (secret roll) Grimes (d20, 12, MISS) but misses, its teeth deflecting off his shield.

Grimes angrily swipes at the thing with his sword (d20, 12, HIT, d6+3, 5+3=8) and the creature bleeds.

Clarence reacts to Dieter's unspoken command (d20, 16, HIT, d8+3, 1+3=4) and ends the viper's life.

The pit viper is dead. Dandy examines Gatto but he too is dead. All Dandy can do is close the gnome's staring eyes.

Inside the cabinet are two sets of dark red robes with black trim and a small silver coffer containing eight lustrous green pearls (100 gp each), and twenty fire opals (50 gp each). There is also a key. Einar picks it up and shows it to Clarence, who hisses and nods.
