Sounds good but (always the but) what about spells. No one has spells? Or will there be a chance to read scrolls or try to learn cantrips?

Otherwise I see everyone funneling into fighters or thieves...

Also, it occurred to me that weapon proficiency rules aren't included in AEC. Just as well. I've removed reference to them in my previous post. We'll use the following rules in their place:

1) As members of a rustic, medieval type society, characters can be assumed to have basic skill with a club, spear, dagger and quarterstaff. When using all other weapons for the first time, they'll be at -1 to hit. After one combat, they'll get the hang of it, and can thereafter use the weapon without penalty.

2) Everyone's allowed to try any weapon once without having it restrict their available classes. For example, if a character picks up a longsword to fight orcs, but then later finds a spell scroll and falls in love with magic, s/he can still become a MU. If s/he keeps the sword, though, and continues fighting monsters with it, then s/he'll need to pick a class that permits the use of swords. Assumed skill with a dagger, see above, does not rule out a character becoming a cleric.

Make sense?

Thanks, guys. I added club and spear to the weapons your characters can use without penalty. In thinking about a rustic, medieval type society, it made sense for the average yeoman to have the skill necessary to participate in an angry mob. And what's an angry mob without torches (clubs) and pitchforks (spears)? :lol:

Let's get going with characters while we're waiting. You can post them here for now. Please create a character over at unseenservant.com, and make your dice rolls there (4d6c1). Character background: Most know me as Teuta, but my full name is Teuta Illyria. I've come up from the Isle of Moray. As one of the Ffolk, I'm considered a barbarian to most, although I speak not in the language of bar-bar-bar: common is my tongue. My parents are dog breeders for the local cantrev lord and I miss my pup. She could tear the throat of a deer or, situation warranting, a destrider. I once saw her siblings take down an owlbear. I’ve decided that I’m in :)!

I’m going to try to go into this with absolutely no preconceived notions as to how my character might turn out in the end. With that in mind, I have used the magic of the AD&D DMG random tables (no re-rolls!) to generate every aspect of my character (I even used the first result of the online random hobbit name generator I could find to get the name).

Dinodas Chubb

Dino is a middle-aged halfling, a leatherworker/tanner by trade. He is about average height (for a halfling!) but rather lean (again, by halfling standards!). His appearance overall is rather dirty, as he generally doesn’t bother to clean up after a long day’s work.

Although he makes a decent living at his craft, he is perpetually poor as he always spends his money as soon as he acquires it, generally on some piece of art or furniture to decorate his home (he is an avid collector), or in donations to the local temple of [**see below**] (he attends services regularly).

Although he affects a friendly demeanor (to the point of servility), in actuality he rather greedy, calculating, and unforgiving. He will cut corners or take advantage of others for his own gain. He is very even-tempered and never lets his emotions get the better of him (he is also a teetotaller).

@ tumblingdice: **This is the only thing I did not roll randomly. None of the Halfling deities matched him very well. I was thinking of making him a follower of Gond, which fits him rather nicely, but then I thought with the Goddess being so prevalent in the Moonshaes that she would be more appropriate? However, I’m not really sure what the Goddess stands for (what characteristics Dino should strive to emulate if he were her follower)?? He is quite religious, so it will have an appreciable effect.
