Logo License Question

Postby Dungeoneer » Tue Oct 25, 2011 3:26 am

Hi Dan! This is Tim from Fantanomicon Press. I'm making paper minis for various gaming genres, and would like to make some based specifically on Mutant Future.

So, I was looking at the terms for using your Labyrinth Lord or Mutant Future logos and I'm trying to see how this works if the product in question is only paper miniatures. Now I understand that we have to include your copyright information (btw, shouldn't they be 2007-2011 for LL and 2008-2011 for MF?). My real question is: do we also have to include the OGL even though we're not really including any game information? Now, most fantasy adventurers, NPCs, and monsters can be made without referencing any specific game (with some exceptions, of course). However, the monster list in Mutant Future is far less "generic". I don't know if depictions of monsters based on monster descriptions counts. I suppose "generic mutant monsters" could be made, but that's hardly the same as having a set of Spidergoats or Pigmen or something.

Thanks in advance!

Good adventuring!
Tim

Hi Tim!

I don't have use of the OGL as a requirement to use the trademark licenses for exactly the reason you mention. Some people want to be more generic for adventures and would rather not use the OGL. For a project like yours though, if you will create images based on the text descriptions of the monsters I think it would be less of a headache to use the OGL. For an electronic product like yours though I don't think this would be too much of an inconvenience.

I'm excited to see what you come up with for MF!

Thanks Dan! I thought it might boil down to "better safe than sorry", and you're right, it's really no trouble to add it in. Still, I thought I'd better ask just in case. And other people may decide they want to know. Thanks again!
