Day 8, Nytdain, Thaumont 8th, Sukiskyn Homestead, Night

The door slams shut, taking with it the chaos raging outside, though the echo of drums still reaches your ears. The couple leads you through a kitchen, then a darkened room that smells of beer, and into a large hall lit with torches. Hey! I said through the room. The beer can wait. Keep moving!

As you gather in the hall, you see long wooden tables and benches, and a large chair. Stuffed game birds and beasts of prey, old hunting implements, and a couple tapestries adorn the walls. Steps lead up to a gallery surrounding the hall, and through the upper windows you catch flashes of light from the flames burning down the barn and the gatehouse. There are no windows on the main floor.

Two women are seated, a young one weeping, an older one offering comfort. A tired-looking man, dressed in the humble clothes of a servant, stoops before them, trying to do the same. A boy of about ten looks up at your approach, and then at a man walking across the room toward you. The man's red hair is peppered with gray. He is wearing chain mail.

"Well met, friends," he greets you in a Traladaran accent, extending his hand. "I am Pyotr. This," he says, nodding at the couple who escorted you in, "my son Taras, his wife Alfana. My brother Stephan hire you, yes? I bid you warm--"

At that you here a crash in the yard. It sounds like the gatehouse collapsing. Pyotr turns his head toward the noise, sighs, then continues. "A warm welcome to Sukisykn." The older woman looks up at him, frowns, and then turns to you.

Actions?

Soldath - Mage

Good to meet you. Soldath will shake hands. What is going on here? Where did all of these goblins come from?!? How long have you been under siege?

Pyotr answers Soldath's questions. "Damned, flea-ridden goblins! All through forest. Two clans attacking us now: Wolfskull (marked by Ws on map) and Redblade (marked by Rs on map). Viper clan was here, but left. Stole our horses and killed two of my men."

The young woman who was weeping begins to wail. The older woman glares at Pyotr, then putting her arm around the young woman, leads her out of the room. It is only after she is standing that you notice the young woman holding an infant. The servant begins to follow, but at a look from the older woman, stays in place.

Pyotr looks down and shakes his head. "Poor Masha," he says. "Her husband Hakos killed. Our blacksmith Novannes too. My wife Darya. She'll look after her for now. Back to goblins," he continues, after a pause. "Usually too busy killing each other to bother us, but now they're attacking us. Hear they raided other settlements in last few days. too."

The master of the homestead thumps on one of the beams holding up the hall. "In here, though, we're all right," he says, looking over your heavily armed and armored group. "With your help, I think we can hold out till dawn. Daylight will drive them off."

The young boy looks up at Pyotr. "I can help, too, Papa."

Athelstan - Fighter

to Pyotr: "Good to meet you, and I'm sorry for your losses. Do you have any idea of the numbers of these things? And do you have an elevated vantage point that we could access? (smirking at Igli) I think we'd like to observe these goblins, to prepare for our next move. With luck, before the sun rises, there will be none of these goblins left alive to slink back to their dens. We shall avenge your fallen, have no doubt, my friend."

OOC: Athelstan isn't speaking for the party, and doesn't expect anyone to follow him, but he's clearly intent on counterattacking these goblins in some way. He's a bit nutty like that...

Renardius (Cleric)

Renardius nods in agreement with Athelstan. "Perhaps we can dissuade them from disturbing you again."

Igli - Dwarf

"Aye," Igli adds his voice to the fighter and cleric, "mayhap we don't have to wait until dawn to drive them off, but drive them off for good. Goblins are weak and cowardly, and better off to everyone dead."

Pyotr smiles at your enthusiasm. "Of course," he says. "Windows on upper floors. Some rooms private, but you can use them to shoot out of, long as you don't touch anything, yes? Also is tower with battlement. I can take you up there. Best vantage point."

The master of the homestead leads all who are interested up the stairs, and then to the battlement atop the tower. He can answer any questions along the way.

Does anyone wish to stay on the main floor? You may ask questions of Taras, Alfana, or the servant.

Athelstan - Goblin-Exterminator

Athelstan will accompany Pyotr and presumably Igli and Renardius up to the battlements to survey the goblin positions and movements.

Tret, rogue

Tret kindly offers to use his trusty bow from one of the upper rooms with windows.

He asks, "Who's this Stephan who you think hired us? We just happened to be passing through. Are you expecting reinforcements?"

Pyotr stops abruptly, then turns to face Tret. "Stephan my brother. He hire you to escort horses, yes? That's why you're here, yes?" he asks, his hand going instinctively to the hilt of the dagger at his belt.
