Space Monkeys!

Just for my own amusement, I've been working on some scripts for a radio/podcast serial. While I was writing them, I thought that they would make a good alternate background for S&S. As a result, I have created a pdf from the first three scripts and added some game information.

The premise of the Space Monkeys! setting is that a quartet of chimpanzees were lost during a test flight of a rocket in the early 1960s. The rocket somehow passed through a space warp and ended up on the other side of the galaxy, where ... Well, I won't give too much away. Suffice to say that the adventures begin there.

Feedback is welcome, as I'd like to know whether or not to continue with the adaptation, and I want to improve the quality of what I'm putting out. However, it will be a slow process as I am only writing one part a week.

The link to the pdf is posted below.

Your script idea reminds me of this cartoon series from 1996-97:

It was a sci-fi spoof. Captain Simian sounded a lot like William Shatner trying to channel John Wayne, or vice-versa.

That said, I love radio shows. With a few sound effects noisemakers, you've got an unlimited special effects budget. ;)

Neat stuff. I remember that cartoon being on.

Jerry Doyle? Really?

Sound effects are easy to get. The BBC has a load of FX CDs that are royalty-free, and I think Garage Band has some in it. Actors and decent recording equipment, on the other hand, are hard to come by :(

But today can't a fast desktop computer and the appropriate software replace a lot of the bulky, expensive equipment that recording used to require? Also, your local college or high school theater could supply actors eager for a recording credit. It might not match the BBC or NPR, but it'd at least be a start. Poke around the web and note the sites dedicated to original audio dramas. They've managed to produce decent quality shows on the proverbial shoestring. :)

13 Nocturne Boulevard is a favorite of mine, but there are plenty of others.

The problem isn't the processing power. My laptop has more capability than the mixing desk I used in my theatre technician days. The problem is the microphone. If your pickup isn't decent, then all the filters in the world aren't going to make a blind bit of difference. I've been doing some research, and decent USB capacitor mikes start at about 100 GBP/150 USD. Elwood Blues was not kidding when he said he traded in the Bluesmobile for a microphone! I may see if I can get one for Christmas or borrow one from a friend.

Speaking of actors ... By coincidence, we got round to discussing the Space Monkeys! scripts at the local writing group last night, over a couple of pints. Some of the regulars are interested in taking part. This thing might yet get off the ground.

19 Nocturne Boulevard? I used to subscribe to Thrilling Adventure Hour, but they haven't done anything new in a while ...

Offer to buy 'em pizza and you've got your cast. ;)
