For discussion of the original 1978 rules and for the revised second edition that is entering development.

The Blutschink In 2e S&S

The old Judge’s Guild magazine The Dungeoneer in issue #9 the Monster of the Month article featured the Blutschink. It gave stats for the Blutschink for 1st edition Starships and Spacemen and several other system including D&D and Gamma World.

In the pictures that were in the original article in the issue, it is depicted as a big bear with vampire fangs.

I made a 2nd edition Starships and Spacemen version of the creature by using the information in the article. (Having D&D and Gamma World versions was a huge help.) Some of the description text is straight from the original description in the article, but I did make some modifications and additions, like covering the effect of a Blutschick drinking Dreiped blood and giving the morale of it, to make usable for 2nd edition Starships and Spacemen.

The Blutschink is from Germanic folklore, but the version in The Dungeoneer is very different form the mythological one it shares the same name with from what I learned while researching into the mythological one.

The Blutschink is a forest dwelling mammal about the size of a Kodiak bear. Its pelt is less shaggy than the Kodiak and is colored a greenish-grey-brown which is ideal for hiding in its woodland territory. The main benefit derived from this environmental adaption is not so much defensive as it is offensive allowing the beast to approach its prey almost invisibly. It claws much like a bear, but its bite is far different. Once it fastens its teeth into a victim,
Also known as the blood-bear or vampire bear, the Blutschink dwells only in the temperate dense woodlands, usually consisting of deciduous or local equivalent vegetation

Like bears, the Blutschink, may hug an opponent for 2d8 hit points of damage if it successfully hits with both claws in the same round. However, if it scores a hit by biting or is able to hug the Blutschink cannot be pushed away, even if the victim has a Strength of 20, and will automatically now each subsequent round inflict 1-6 hit points of damage as it feeds on the blood of the victim.

If the victim of a Blutschink is Tauran, Dreiped, or Andromedan, and the creature “locks on” with its vampire like bite not only will the victim take damage from blood loss but damage will be done to the Blutschink as well due to the differences in the base metals of the two races. In the case of a Tauran or Dreiped, the Blutschink will take the same amount damage of blood loss it does to its’ victim. In the case of the Andromedan, the Blutschink will take double the damage it does to its’ victim in blood loss. The creature will break off the attack on that victim. A side effect of the Andromedan blood is that it gives the blood-bear a 1- 6 turn of immunity from energy weapons (For other alien creatures and races with non-iron based metabolisms the SM must decided how any blood they have affects the Blutschtick if it feeds on it.)

A Blutchtchick with its fangs embedded still can attempt to attack the victim with claws each round while it drain a victim of blood, it will not an cannot make any bite attacks when it is embedded
