In an old Rolemaster book, Creatures & Treasures II there was a nice little article on incorporating magic items into the story. A short story/battle and a few magic items were listed. Im going to convert these to LL. I'll post the story here later when I can.
Cudgel of Smiting
This short weighty cudgel is made of twisted hardwood. Damage as mace , +1 magical. It can cast any Level 1 Magic-user/Elf spell twice per day. It is sentient, and will speak in a low mumbling voice to its owner, from a mouth-like twist of bark on its knob end. It believes in the Merchants credo of fair profit for fair toil. It can detect gold/silver within 60 feet. Treated as a sentient sword INT 10.
Hurmgar's Chain
This large necklace is made of 14 large links of dwarven steel, each scribed with runes. Wearing this necklace protects as if wearing a full set of chainmail armor AC and gives protection vs. any special vorpal/severe attacks at the neck/head. Attacks that do strike the wearer do 1 point of damage less, minimum of 1 damage. No other armor can be worn, except helm and shield.
Ogre sack
This plain cloth sack has drawstring of old leather. It appears to be a simple peasants bag. If opened and shaken vigorously- two large Ogres will fall out of the sack. They will obey any order of the sacks owner and are completely loyal. They cannot be charmed or controlled by others. The owner of the sack can also speak/understand the Ogre tongue. The sack appears empty if looking inside. Anything placed inside the sack disappears forever.
The Ogres are of the largest size, maximum hit points.(no weapons/armor) The Ogres may be called once per week for 3 turns at a time, 30 rounds. At the end of that time they will climb back inside the sack. (it will magically stretch to fit ) If slain, and shoved back in the sack, they will be alive and healed the next week.
