I always imagined "darts" to be more similar in size to lawn darts (at minimum), not those tiny modern indoor darts. Put a barbed head and a lead weight on a lawn dart and you could do some serious damage I think.

yep, a dart is more or less a light javelin.
BTW Dyson's houserule looks very good.
