For me, I long ago decided to make battle axes 1 handed weapons. i also introduced the idea of a Great Axe into my game. It causes no problems and works well in my games. There was an old Dragon Magazine that once suggested a weapon called a Dwarven Claymore. It was an interesting idea for a dwarf version of a two-handed sword.

I had added a Dwarven Battleaxe and Dwarven Battlehammer to the market in my games for the same cost as their full sized counterparts though a little bit lighter because of their smaller size but capabl;e of the same damage. They are only usable by smaller races like Dwarves, Gnomes and Halflings.

Same question for long sword. I was thinking to allow the use of 1d6 (or less) weapons with one hand, and 1d8 (or more) weapons with two hands, but i would like to know how people deals with it !

Of late I have been of the opinion that the only d8 weapon dwarves should be allowed is the battle axe, which is two handed; and its use comes (obviously) at the expense of the shield. The long sword is off-limits to them as being too long. If they want, they can wield it two-handed.

S&W handles Battle Axes very simply:

Swords & Wizardry Core Rules, pg. 20 wrote:1 Weapon can be used either one- or two-handed
2 When wielded two-handed, gain +1 damage bonus

This simple rules is what I've adopted to give a little love back to the dwarves.

Hi everyone.

I dig this. This makes the dagger a d6 weapon, if you're a fighter, correct? Because I always felt that a dagger in the right hands was no mere d4 poker.

Indeed - dagger, short sword, javelin, etc.

The one thing that's a bit of a problem for this approach is the dart. I've been considering a simplified version of what you have here, where damage is determined by the PC's HD type. But it seems stupid that fighters and dwarves could do 1d8 damage by throwing darts. For you they would do 1d6, but still, even that seems too much. It's a dart :?

I always imagined "darts" to be more similar in size to lawn darts (at minimum), not those tiny modern indoor darts. Put a barbed head and a lead weight on a lawn dart and you could do some serious damage I think.

From wikipedia "In Europe, short but heavy-pointed darts were sometimes used in warfare. These had a length of about 30 to 60 cm (0.98 to 2.0 ft) and resembled an arrow with a long head and short shaft."
